...who feels the need to take a break from an increasingly dysfunctional relationship.

My own thoughts here (after [livejournal.com profile] taylorgibbs left me a thought provoking comment) -- It was pointed out to me that those independent authors, musicians and filmmakers will be the ones hit hardest by this ... The people who need to get the message are the Big Guns ... the major corporations who are backing this. So ... sure, do a black out, but ... support the independents, those who are working for themselves, just trying to get their words/music/vision out there ...

So if, if you want to protest, then target the Big Guns ...

Or, sign petitions, write your Congressman, the Senators, hell, write the President ...

We can't usually afford to do much in a given month regardless but I'll gladly save any money we would have spent to help this cause. Megaupload was just the beginning. If we don't make our voices heard now the internet will soon change and it won't be for the better.

*hugs*

Although I am against censorship on any level, I have to state my own opinion about this. The Internet should not be censored, period. I also feel that no one should tell anyone else what to do, even if its in protest. Black March is a nice idea in theory, but the reality of it is that its a trade off from one system telling us what to do to another. Another reason I see this as a bad idea is because the economy is screwed up enough as it is without this protest making the "stocks and shares will blip from a large enough loss of incomes."

I don't mean it to be a 'do it' kind of thing ... I just want to get the message out there and to give people and idea as to a way to protest what is going on.

And after my friend below gave me some interesting thoughts, I have edited my post to reflect that if, if you're going to protest, the protest the big guys, not the little guys working hard to be heard ...

Unfortunately, it will hit the little guy much harder than the big guy. I'm trying desperately to make it as a self pubbed author. While Nora Roberts and Tom Clancy wouldn't likely see any sort of blip in their sales, a boycott like this, especially that targets my readership could kill me, and dozens. hundreds even of the little guys out there :(

While I do understand the concept and am massively anti SOPA and PIPA, I think our collective energies should be directed against the big corporations and not overall.

You know as I reread the big black picture and your comment, you are absolutely right ...

You're right in that the little guys are going to be the ones who lose here ... independent authors and musicians will be the ones to lose ... hmmm ... A Big Corp Blackout/Support the Indies Blackout might be better ...

I just really want the government and all the big companies to see that they're trying to do is not going to work ... that the 'little people' have big pull and will quash whatever they try to do ...

Thanks so much! Reading back it sounded wayyy too assertive, so I'm glad you saw it in the spirit it was intended.

I want them to see the same. I think the blackout really nailed home the freedoms of the Internet are something we really rely on, the websites that could be shuttered.

What [livejournal.com profile] taylorgibbs said. I just said the same thing on my LJ. It would hurt the indie people who are trying to make it.
