Clark wandered through the Mansion, headed for the game room where he knew Lex was. As he got closer to the game room, he could hear Lex on the phone. He slowed his walk, and turned up the super-hearing.
“Yes … in three weeks … no, no one knows anything yet … No, of course I don’t want the press to know of my impending nuptials … I haven’t even proposed yet … yes, call me back with more details.” Clark heard Lex disconnect, and quickened his pace.
“Hey Lex,” Clark said casually from the doorway. He watched Lex quickly close windows on his laptop and lock it. He gave Clark a large smile, and motioned him in.
“Hey there Spaceboy, how are you?” Lex asked, standing from his chair and moving out from behind the desk.
“Perfect! Only three more weeks until graduation, then it’s a whole summer of freedom,” Clark said, casually making his way to the couch and flopping down.
“You still want to do that cross country road trip?” Lex asked, sitting down next to him. Clark nodded, and then chuckled when his stomach rumbled. “Ah, the alien is hungry,” Lex said with a laugh. “I let the staff have the afternoon off. I’ll run down to the kitchen and get us something to eat. Why don’t you break out whatever homework you have? It should occupy you until I come back; then I can beat your ass at pool.”
Clark watched Lex leave and smiled. He’d never been happier since he let Lex know his secret. Their friendship had only grown stronger. Clark spent every day at Lex’s; doing homework, playing pool, discussing history or politics. Clark’s parents had even starting accepting Lex; Jonathan had invited Lex over for dinner one Sunday night, a big sign that their friendship had been accepted.
Clark was worried though. If the conversation he’d overheard was true, Clark was about to lose his best friend. Who was this person who Lex was proposing to? Clark hadn’t seen him with anyone new. In fact, the only person Lex had been with constantly was Clark. He felt an unfamiliar ache in his heart … was he jealous? Clark considered the ache. Jealousy; yes Clark was jealous. He was about to lose his best friend to some gold digging viper who Clark didn’t even know. Without realizing it, Clark had gotten up, and moved to sit in front of the computer. Clark tuned his hearing, and could hear Lex coming up the stairs. He began to quickly rifle through some of the drawers, and found nothing. Clark didn’t really think he would find anything, but there was no way he could ask Lex outright. He could hear Lex approaching faster, and quickly made his way back to the couch and attempted his homework.
Lex smiled when he saw Clark deep in thought looking over his homework. He best friend; Lex never thought he would have a best friend. Clark had saved his life and that had set the bond. Their friendship had blossomed, and soon Clark had trusted Lex enough to tell him his secrets. Lex had just assumed that Clark was a meteor mutant like him. He had been shocked and surprised to find that Clark had come with the meteors. It would figure that the only person to get close enough to be a best friend would be from another planet. He had never felt as close to someone as he did with Clark. When Clark graduated, Lex feared he would lose his best friend.
“I come bearing food,” Lex said, carrying in a tray filled with crackers, cheese, and fruit. He set it down next to Clark and watched him dig in. He watched Clark bite into a strawberry, and watched as a small amount of juice started to dribble down his chin. He reached out and gently wiped the juice away with his thumb.
“Thanks,” Clark said with a small blush. “So, what have you been doing lately?” Clark asked conversationally while looking down at his math homework.
“I’ve been working a lot; trying to make sure that LexCorp is still successful and working on getting all those meteor rocks. It’s been hard work, trying to keep my father off my back. There are things I am doing right now that he would just love to know about. Things are happening; great things are about to happen … I can feel it,” Lex said, an air of wistfulness and mystery in his features. Clark stared at him and the look on his face. That ache came back and Clark tried to force it to go away. If getting married was going to make Lex happy, then Clark was going to be happy.
“I’m glad Lex. Great things should happen for you, you deserve it,” Clark said softly. “Wow, it’s late; I should be getting home. Listen, Mom and Dad are inviting you to dinner this Sunday.”
“As much as I would love to, there are some things I need to do. I might be unavailable for the next few weeks; business and meteor testing. But I promise that I’ll be there for your graduation,” Lex said with a smile. Clark frowned slightly, but nodded.
“Okay, well let me know when you have a free moment. Three weeks without seeing you and I’ll go crazy,” Clark said, and Lex watched as Clark’s eyes widened at his own statement. “I mean … um … You’re my best friend and … um … yeah, just give me a call when you’re not busy,” Clark said and quickly left the game room.
Lex watched him go with a small smile. His hand went into his pocket and wrapped around the velvet box in his pocket, and he gripped it tight. The thought ran through his head that maybe this would go better than he’d hoped.

During the next few weeks, Clark barely saw Lex. He was always in meetings with his board or in a meeting with his scientists or something. When he did manage to see Lex, he was always distracted. Clark wondered if he was still going through with the proposal and what was going to happen then. He didn’t have all that much time to dwell on it, however. He was weeks away from graduating, and had finals to worry about. He spent time studying and hanging out with his friends. They were all going different places that summer, so this was their last time to be together until the fall.
Now it was graduation. Clark stood in his bedroom, attempting to tie his tie. Martha came in behind him and immediately tied it for him.
“How do you do that?” Clark asked, exasperated.
“Years of practice.” Martha looked at him in the mirror. “You just look so grown up. It seems like just yesterday I was sending you off to your first day of kindergarten, and suddenly you turn eighteen and are graduating from high school. You have grown up so fast, and you are so mature. I know that you can handle any surprises that will come your way,” Martha said with a secret smile.
Clark wondered a little at his mom’s mysterious comment, but didn’t let it worry him. He followed his mom downstairs and came face to face with his dad and the camera. “Dad,” Clark said, embarrassed. He hated having pictures taken of him. Lex had said he should become a male model, but Clark just couldn’t stand still long enough to have pictures taken. He just couldn’t sit still and couldn’t stop fidgeting.
“Oh just let him take some pictures. Your high school graduation happens only once.” Martha said, smiling at her son. “All right Jonathan, that’s enough pictures. Let’s get going, otherwise we’re going to be late.” Jonathan acquiesced and they all headed out to the truck and drove to the high school.

Clark yawned. They’d all walked and received their diplomas and now they were listening to some students make some boring speeches. Clark allowed his mind to wander. He hoped Lex was sitting in the audience. He didn’t get a chance to check for him before the ceremony started and had missed seeing Lex the last few weeks. He never realized how much he relied on being able to talk Lex every day. Lex had been so busy the past few weeks that Clark had only spoken to him once or twice. He missed his friend; the sound of his laughter, the way his eyes lit up when he smiled, the way those purple shirts just hugged every muscle. Clark’s eyes shot wide open at the last thought. Is that the way he really thought of Lex? Clark thought again, and realized that yes, Clark really did think of Lex that way. That ache in his heart that he kept trying to push away was jealousy. He didn’t want Lex to marry some gold digging viper because he wanted Lex. The realization hit him so hard he almost shot up out of his seat and headed for the bleachers to find Lex. Common sense, however, told him that it would be a bad idea. So, he waited out the rest of the ceremony.
The second the ceremony was over, Clark headed straight for the bleachers, to find Lex and tell him of his revelation. He didn’t see Lex, but he did find his parents.
“Was Lex here? I don’t see him around?” Clark asked, practically bouncing.
His parents shared a look. “He sat next to us during the ceremony, but he had to leave to get things ready for the celebration he’s having at the Mansion. It’s supposed to start in a little bit, so why don’t we just head over there right now,” Martha said, placing a calming hand on Clark’s arm. Clark looked at his mom, smiled, and followed her and Jonathan to the car.

“Clark, are you enjoying the party?” Clark turned at Lex’s voice, and smiled.
“Yes, it’s fun. I’m just so happy to see you! I haven’t seen you in weeks,” Clark said, pulling Lex into a big hug.
“I know, and I’m sorry. I’ve been working on quite a few things, and I needed them done in a certain amount of time,” Lex replies slowly. “Things have fallen into place very well and I am pleased with how things happened.”
“I’m glad,” Clark said softly.
“Can we go somewhere private for a moment; there’s something important I need to talk to you about,” Lex said. Clark nodded slowly and followed Lex out onto a balcony just off the ballroom. They stood silently, watching the stars. Lex turned to face Clark and smiled.
“Things have been moving at a pace I hadn’t expected. A pace I hadn’t expected, yet very pleased with …” Lex continued to rattle on, and Clark was only half listening. “… With this engagement.” Lex suddenly had Clark’s full attention. “I feel that this is going to be a wonderful thing for me … for us,” Lex finished with a smile.
“Oh … Yes … I hope you are very happy,” Clark said softly.
“You know? How do you know?” Lex asked, curious.
“A couple of weeks ago, I heard you on the phone with someone. I hope that you and whoever she is are very happy together. I just hope I don’t lose your friendship,” Clark said, slight tears in his voice. Lex immediately stepped closer to Clark.
“Clark, sometimes I wish you could read minds; it would make things so much easier. Clark, your superpowers are only to be used for good, not eavesdropping,” Lex said with a nervous grin. “Um … This is harder than I thought it would be. There is no woman that I’m proposing too,” Lex said softly. “I’ve been in meetings with specific people, making sure that things would go smoothly. Women are nothing to me; if I date them it’s only for business purposes.” Lex pulled a velvet box out of his pocket and opened it, displaying a very masculine platinum ring with a diamond recessed in the middle. “I know you might thing that I’m addicted to weddings, but I promise you that this is the last proposal I will ever make. Clark, I don’t want to lose you. You are the best thing that could have ever happened to me, and I have fallen for you, hard. I know it’s a shock and things are moving fast. I mean, we haven’t even dated, and I don’t even know if you’re gay –“ Lex was cut off as he found Clark’s lips pressed against his. Lex moaned as he felt Clark nibble on his bottom lip.
The kiss ended all too quickly and Lex stepped back. “I realized during the graduation ceremony just how I felt about you. When I overheard you talking about an engagement I felt this ache in my chest. I was jealous; someone else was going to be closer to you, and I didn’t want that to happen. You are everything to me,” Clark said slowly, taking the ring out of the box and slipping it on his ring finger. Lex lifted the hand, and kissed Clark’s knuckles. “Wait, what about my parents? I know they’ve accepted you as my friend, but my fiancé and future husband?”
“I wouldn’t worry about it. Who do you think I’ve been meeting with?” Lex replied with a smile.
“I thought you were meeting with scientists and board members,” Clark exclaimed, still looking at the ring on his finger.
“I was, but I was also meeting with your parents. I would never have even thought of asking you unless I had your parents blessing,” Lex said with a smile and a kiss to Clark’s cheek.
“You mean?” Clark asked, amazed.
“They knew what I was going to do tonight, and have given their blessing,” Lex replied. Clark smiled, wrapped him in a huge hug, and kissed him. “What do you say we go back into the party?” Lex asked. Clark nodded his agreement, took Lex’s hand and followed him back into the party.
“Clark, Lex, where have you two been?” Martha asked with a large smile. Clark smiled, and showed her the platinum band that graced his left ring finger. Martha’s smiled widened and she immediately embraced Clark and Lex. “Oh I just knew you’d say yes! Your father and I are both so happy, Clark!” Martha stepped back and allowed Jonathan to step forward.
“All I’ve ever wanted is for you to be happy, son. And Lex has proved to me time and again that he is nothing like his father. He is a good match for you son,” Jonathan said with a small grin. Clark graced him with a smile and embraced him in a bear hug.
“Um … hate to break the moment, but we have some announcements to make,” Lex said.
“What other announcements?” Clark asked, curious.
“Well, you were right. I was in meetings with my board and my scientists. I did invite some of the press here tonight; those I could trust with this story. Not only are we announcing our engagement,” Lex said with a sappy smile, “But I am also going to announce that LexCorp scientists are only a couple of months away from discovering a cure for those who have been seriously affected by the meteors.”
“Lex, that’s great news! All of those people in Belle Reve can get the help they need,” Clark said with a smile and placed a quick kiss on Lex’s lips. Jonathan and Martha shared a smile and wandered furhter into the party. Clark and Lex stayed out on the edges for a few more moments, locked in a tight embrace.
“Ready to face the wolves?” Lex asked.
“As long as you’re with me I can face anything,” Clark said softly, and followed Lex. His future was waiting.
