So ... when
ansera did the Criminal Minds Kink Meme (the 3rd) ... I posted a prompt that didn't get written ... when it was all said and done, I just decided I would write it myself ...
I started writing it and here's what I have so far. The working title it 'A Life, Extraordinary' ... It's Spencer/Derek and AU in that Spencer never left Vegas and didn't join the BAU. Instead he's got a day job (I haven't decided yet LOL) and on the weekends he's ... well ... here, just read :D
A Life, Extraordinary
Summary: In a glitzy club full of performers and patrons they meet. Derek Morgan of the Behavioral Analysis Unit and Artemis, the Virgin Queen of Gipsy in Las Vegas. Underneath the wig and the makeup is Spencer Reid, shy, quiet and unassuming. Derek is intrigued by Artemis and infatuated with Spencer … sparks fly, but can they make it work?
“You want me to go where?” Derek Morgan turned around and looked at his best friend, IT Specialist with the BAU, Penelope Garcia.
“Gipsy,” Penelope said, snagging his hand and pulling him towards the front doors of the hotel. The whole team had been called to Las Vegas to work on a case. The case had been solved and the whole team had been given two weeks to themselves. Penelope and Derek had chosen to remain in Vegas to play a bit while everyone else had gone back to DC.
“What is Gipsy?” Derek asked.
“One of the hottest clubs in Vegas with the best drag queens in town,” Penelope replied with a grin.
“Wait, what?” Derek stopped in his tracks, causing his friend to nearly fall over. “You want me to go where?”
“Keep your cool, it’s not like men don’t go there all the time,” Penelope replied. “Although a delicious piece of chocolate like you might stand out a bit.”
“Baby girl, you’re crazy if you think I’m going with you,” Derek said.
“Oh come on, it’s not going to kill you,” Penelope said. “Who knows, you might even meet that someone special.”
“In a club called Gipsy full of drag queens? Dream on,” Derek replied. Penelope was the one person on the team Derek had trusted the most. Their connection had been almost instantaneous, and many a secret had been spilled over a Friday Happy Hour.
“Come on, please?” Penelope said. “I don’t want to go there all alone. Something might happen … “
Derek groaned and Penelope knew she’d won. “Fine,” he said. “We stay for three hours and then we leave,” Derek said.
“Deal,” Penelope said with a grin.
“What did I get myself into,” Derek muttered as he followed Penelope outside to catch a cab to … Gipsy.
* * *
The club was packed. Men, women and drag queens alike crowded the club, creating an aura of excitement and anticipation.
“What’s up with everyone?” Derek asked.
“They’re waiting for Artemis, the Virgin Queen,” Penelope replied, sipping her drink.
“Who?” Derek said, taking a deep drink of his beer.
“Only the most sought after drag queen in Vegas,” Penelope said. “She’s legendary in this town. Arrived on the scene about a year ago and didn’t just make waves - she made tidal waves, cupcake.”
Derek shrugged. “What’s so special about her?” he asked.
“No idea,” Penelope said. “But that’s what we’re here to find out.”
Derek sighed and downed the rest of his beer. He really wasn’t having a lot of fun. He enjoyed spending time with Penelope, he really did, but it was so loud in the club he could barely hear himself think.
The emcee took the stage and tapped the microphone. “And now, the moment you’ve all been waiting for,” he said. “The crème de la crème! The Virgin Queen … Artemis!”
The crowd cheered and hooted as the curtains parted on the stage. The lights were dim and all Derek could see was a silhouette … a fabulous silhouette.
“Never know how much I love you, never know how much I care … “ The voice of Peggy Lee filled the club and crowd hushed, waiting expectantly. The lights slowly came up and Derek suddenly found himself as entranced as the rest of the crowd.
Derek’s gaze began at her feet, which were encased in silver gladiator heels. His eyes slid up, admiring the pale, toned legs he glimpsed between the slit in the deep purple Grecian style, one shouldered gown. As Derek’s gaze reached her face, he almost stopped breathing. Wide, dark eyes were enhanced with black kohl, mascara and deep purple eye shadow. Derek’s eyes were drawn to her lips as she lip synced to the song; full and sensuous, they were coated in a pale purple gloss, and her tongue peeked out sporadically, causing a long since forgotten tingle to spark in Derek’s groin. Long, red hair cascaded over her bare shoulder - it was obviously a wig, but Derek didn’t care. Artemis was truly beautiful and she had Derek’s full attention.
“You give me fever … in the morning, fever when you hold me tight … “ Artemis stepped off the stage and moved through the crowd, gracing particular patrons with gentle caresses and teasing smiles.
Derek watched her every move, unable to tear his gaze away from her. Drag queens had never been his thing but she … there was a grace and an elegance about her that drew Derek to her.
“Romeo loved Juliet, Juliet she felt the same … “ Artemis was now standing directly in front of Derek. She gave him a smile, brushed her manicured nails (painted deep purple to match her dress) across his chest and moved on.
“She’s gorgeous,” Penelope murmured, breaking the spell. Derek jumped a bit and looked over at his friend.
“Yes, yes she is,” he agreed. “Does she hang around after her show?”
“I’ve asked around,” Penelope said with a knowing smile. “Apparently it is her custom to choose one admirer and have a drink with them after her performance … “
Derek nodded his understanding, watching Artemis move through the crowds and finish her song. She ascended the stage and gave a graceful curtsey to thunderous applause. The curtains closed, the crowds began dancing and chatting again and Penelope began talking about how awesome the club was.
Derek tried to pay attention, he really did. But his thoughts were stuck on Artemis. She was so confident, so … sexy.
He was so lost in his thoughts he almost missed the tap on his shoulder. He turned, surprised that someone had managed to sneak up on him like that.
“What?” Derek asked the effeminate man standing behind him.
“The Virgin Queen wishes to have drink with you,” the man said. “She awaits you in the VIP lounge.”
“Well … what are you waiting for?” Penelope asked when Derek didn’t move. “Go!”
Derek gave himself a mental shake and nodded. “Right, going,” he said.
“Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do!” Penelope called.
“That’s a short list, baby girl!” Derek called back as he made his way to the VIP lounge.
Penelope just laughed and got another drink. She knew she’d made the right choice dragging her friend to the club.
The VIP lounge was dark, lit with a multitude of candles. Derek stopped just inside to allow his eyes to adjust to the sudden darkness.
“Welcome.” The voice wasn’t what Derek expected. It was husky, whiskey over velvet instead of champagne over silk.
Derek squinted in the direction of the voice. He caught sight of Artemis and stepped closer. She was reclined on a pile of pillows, legs crossed, sipping from a glass of wine.
“Come. Sit,” Artemis motioned to the pillows next to her. “Enjoy a glass of wine with me.”
Derek moved across the room and sat next to the enchanting woman. There was a glass of wine sitting on the low table for him, so he took it and sipped carefully.
“Hello gorgeous,” Artemis said, eyeing Derek appreciatively. “Haven’t seen you around here.”
“First timer,” Derek replied.
“A virgin,” Artemis said, chuckling softly. “Like me.”
“Nothin’ like you,” Derek murmured, relaxing against the pillows.
“A flatterer as well,” Artemis purred. “And now, might I ask your name? I told my young man to just look for the gorgeous piece of dark chocolate on the dance floor, praying who he brought back was you.”
“Derek.”
“Derek … Germanic … Ruler of the people,” Artemis murmured with a smile. “Are you a ruler, Derek?”
Derek laughed and shook his head. “No, I’m not a ruler,” he said.
“I think you are,” Artemis replied. She set her wine glass on the table and leaned in, her lips millimeters away from Derek’s ear. “You rule those around you with a smile, with your words, with your … body.” She ran a hand across Derek’s chest with a seductive smile.
Derek shivered, that tingle in his groin growing more intense by the minute. He’d never met someone who had such power over him. Yet here was this … drag queen … and she had him completely entranced.
“I bet you have men and women falling all over you,” Artemis said with a smile, pulling back slightly.
“I do all right,” Derek replied with a smile. “So, out of all the men and women in Gipsy tonight … I caught your eye?”
“Definitely,” Artemis replied. “Most of the men here tonight … I’ve seen them all, had drinks with them all.”
“Ah, so I’m new and shiny,” Derek said, a bit teasingly.
Artemis chuckled. “You are new,” she agreed. “You’re also gorgeous and mysterious … I would have chosen you even if everyone tonight was new.”
“Now who’s a flatterer?” Derek teased, taking another sip of wine.
“Touché,” Artemis replied with a smile. “So tell me, Derek, what do you do?”
“I work for the FBI,” Derek said. “Behavioral Analysis Unit … “
“A profiler,” Artemis murmured. “Interesting … “
“And may I ask, is this all you do?” Derek asked, watching Artemis intently.
“If you mean do I have a ‘day job’, then yes,” Artemis replied. “I am Artemis on the weekends, and during the week I live a dreadfully dull and boring life.”
“Doing what?”
Before Artemis had a chance to respond, one of the bouncers poked his head in. “Closing time,” he said, looking at Derek.
“All ready?” Derek said.
“Time flies,” Artemis replied with a smile. “I hope to see you again sometime.”
“I’m in Vegas for two weeks,” Derek replied as he stood. “Maybe you’ll see me again.” He finished his glass of wine and made his exit.
* * *
Derek bit back a yawn as he entered the coffee shop. He couldn’t seem to turn off his internal clock, no matter how late he stayed up the night before. It was 9:00 am and he’d already worked out in the gym located in the hotel, gone for a swim and showered. The concierge had pointed him towards a coffee shop and Derek soon found himself in line for his $4 cup of coffee.
“Large coffee, black,” Derek said to the girl behind the counter, who smiled flirtatiously.
“Coming right up,” she said, taking his money.
“Thanks,” Derek replied, moving over so the next person could place their order. He leaned against the counter, watching the other patrons with a trained eye. It was hard to break profiler habits, even on vacation.
Sitting in the corner of the coffee shop, far away from most of the patrons, Morgan noticed a .. delicate man quietly reading a book, his long, elegant fingers barely skimming each page.
There was something about him that … called to Derek. He grabbed his cup of coffee when his name was called. But instead of leaving, he headed in the direction of the man in the corner.
“That book any good?” Derek asked, leaning against the pillar directly across from the man.
“Actually, yes,“ the man said. He lifted his eyes to look up at Derek and Derek stared. Those eyes … not lined with kohl or enhanced my mascara and eye shadow. Derek knew those eyes … had stared into those eyes two nights earlier as they shared wine. It was Artemis.
“You’re -” Derek stared.
“Reid, Spencer Reid,” the man said.
So ... what do you think so far? Someone kick my butt into finishing it!
