Summary: He thought he didn't have time for love ... but Destiny made time
A/N: Inspired by a Terri Clark song - lyrics are at the end
Clark stood on the porch, clutching his daughter Lara to his chest. He watched as his high school sweetheart, Lana Lang, tossed her stuff into her car.
“You’re better off without me, Clark,” Lana was saying. “I’m not what you need. You need more than what I’ve been giving you.” She climbed into the car, and drove off, not even bothering to look back at him.
Lara started fussing a bit, and Clark sighed and wandered inside. He looked around for her lavender blanket, and wrapped it around her before fixing her a bottle. As he sat down to feed his daughter, he thought about his life. His mother was right; he and Lana should have waited before they got together. His parents were in Washington DC, where his dad was busy changing the world. Once they had left, Lana had moved in, and she and Clark had tried to be the happy couple. Then Lana got pregnant. Clark stood by her through it all, and now …
He was alone. Clark was sorely tempted to call his parents, but he didn’t want them to stop their lives. He was an adult – he could handle this.

“Thanks Cassie, I’ll have your check for you on Monday,” Clark said as he relieved the sitter. He’d managed to get a job at the local factory, helping with the books. The fact that he didn’t have a college degree hadn’t mattered; he was a fast learner and intelligent. His days were spent working on the books, and his nights were Lara.
Once Cassie had left, Clark played with his daughter a bit, fed her dinner, gave her a bath, and put her to bed. It was a Friday night and Clark had nowhere to be. Chloe tried to get him to go out with her, hoping he’d meet someone new. But Clark had all he needed in his daughter. She was his entire life. Everything he was doing was for her.

“Lara Marie Kent you’d best hurry up and change! If you’re not down here in 5 minutes we’re going to be late for ballet!” Clark said. He put his briefcase away and put his jacket and tie on the back of the kitchen chair. He sat down and took a moment to relax. His life had changed drastically in the past 6 years. He’d somehow managed to go to night school and get his accounting degree. He was now doing all the accounting for the factory and had people actually working for him. Now he was able to get off before Lara got out of school. He could pick her up and take her to all her lessons.
“Daddy, I’m ready!” Lara bounded down the stairs, two brown pigtails and bright green eyes. Clark swooped her into his arms and spun her around.
“All right, let’s go,” Clark said, swinging her around and settling her into the booster seat in the backseat of his car. He drove her into town, listening to her chatter on about her day at school. Clark dropped her off at ballet and pressed a kiss to her cheek.
“All right, I’m going to do my grocery shopping, and then I have class. Hayley is going to pick you up, and I’ll see you tonight, okay?” Clark said.
“Okay, Daddy,” Lara said. “Have fun at school!” She ran off to join her friends, and Clark climbed back into the car and headed for the market.

Clark spent way too much time in the market, and was running late for class. He was taking extra classes at the local college in business so he could have a better understanding of the workings of the factory. He had straight A’s, so he wasn’t too worried about missing a class, but it still frustrated him. He put all the groceries in the trunk of the car, ready to get them home. He decided that missing one class wouldn’t kill him. As he was walking to the driver’s side door, he noticed the flat tire.
“Shit,” Clark said, running his hands through his hair. It wasn’t that he didn’t know how to change the tire, it was just that all of his groceries were back there, and he would have to move them all and it was one thing that he really didn’t want to deal with.
“Can I help you?” Clark turned around and stared at the tall, bald man smiling at him, bright blue eyes twinkling.
“Um … thanks,” Clark said, his cheeks pink. “I can do it, but I just put all my groceries in the trunk.”
The other man chuckled. “You can transfer them to my trunk, if you want. I’m Lex, by the way.”
Clark smiled. “Clark,” he said. “And thanks. It’s just one other thing to happen today.”
Lex laughed. “I understand that,” he said. “I was out here to check up on the factory and found things in shambles.”
Clark nearly dropped the groceries he was moving. “You’re Lex Luthor?””
Lex nodded. “That I am,” he said.
“Mr. Luthor,” Clark said. “I hope not everything was in shambles. I made sure to double and triple check the books because I knew you were coming.”
“You’re Clark Kent, right?” At the nod, Lex smiled. “Don’t worry about the books. I checked them and they’re perfect. I’ve heard good things about you.”
Clark sighed with relief as he finished moving the groceries and started working on replacing the flat tire. “I’m glad, sir,” he said as he worked.
“Please call me Lex. We’re not at the office and I’m not your superior. In fact, how about we get a cup of coffee?”
Clark almost dropped the spare tire. “Um … as nice as that sounds, I should get my groceries home.”
“Well, how about a cup of coffee at your place?” Lex boldly asked. “I don’t know many people here, and you’ve been so nice.”
Clark blushed a bit as he finished changing his tire. “Um … sure. You can follow me back to my house,” he said.
Lex grinned and helped Clark transfer the groceries back into the trunk of Clark’s car.
“Great, I’ll follow you,” Lex said.
Clark gave Lex a shy smile and climbed into his car, watching as Lex followed him all the way back to his house.
* * *
Clark poured Lex his third cup of coffee. They had been sitting and talking for hours, and Clark couldn’t remember the last time he’d felt so at ease. He found himself staring at that small scar on Lex’s upper lip, that smooth skin. ‘Gosh he’s handsome,’ Clark thought to himself.
“So, do you have kids?” Lex asked softly.
Clark took a deep breath. “She’s 6,” he replied.
“I saw the booster seat in the car, and the Flinstones vitamins in the grocery bag, and the dolls on the couch in your living room,” Lex said with a smile. “I love kids. Does she have your eyes?”
* * *
That was it. That was the moment that Clark’s world changed for the better. He and Lex started dating; casually at first, but it quickly became serious. They had been together for a year when Lara innocently asked if Lex was going to be her other daddy. Clark chuckled and Lex’s eyes twinkled.
“If you Daddy says yes, then I will,” Lex whispered, showing Clark the platinum band with the word ‘Destiny’ inscribed on it. “What do you say, Clark?”
“Yes,” Clark said. “Yes.”
“She Didn’t Have Time”
By Terri Clark
He said goodbye from the edge of the porch
Like she'd been some casual friend
He said "your better off with out me
I'm not what you need"
Like her momma had said about him
He started the car
Pulled out of the drive
Didn't waste any time lookin' back
She watched him go
Thinkin' even a stranger
Would show more compassion than that
She could've cried
Like she'd been some casual friend
He said "your better off with out me
I'm not what you need"
Like her momma had said about him
He started the car
Pulled out of the drive
Didn't waste any time lookin' back
She watched him go
Thinkin' even a stranger
Would show more compassion than that
She could've cried
But she didn't have time
She had a baby to feed
A pink blanket to find
To rock their little one to sleep
She could've laid in bed for hours
Giving misery the power
But she didn't have time
She got a sitter, and she got a job
'cause she had a promise to keep
Her day was a factory and evening survival
At night was exhaustion and sleep
Sometimes she felt life was passing her by
And watching was all she could do
Her friends said "you gotta get outta the house
And maybe you'll meet someone new"
She could've tried
But she didn't have time
She had a five year old to feed
She had ballet class, piano lessons
And t-ball little league
She could've laid awake for hours
Giving lonely nights the power
But she didn't have the time
Not time where would she find the time
To trust a man again
Not time for that flat tire
A crowded parking lot and then
Not time but yes have coffee with the man
Who got her tired fixed
She was thinking gosh he's handsome
When he asked do you have kids
She could've lied
But she didn’t have time
All she said was "she's five"
He said "i saw the car seat I love kids
Does she have your eyes?"
And they sat and talked for hours
Giving destiny it's power
She could've been afraid
To fall in love that night
But she didn't have time
She could've been afraid
To fall in love that night
But she didn't have time
She had a baby to feed
A pink blanket to find
To rock their little one to sleep
She could've laid in bed for hours
Giving misery the power
But she didn't have time
