Clark walked slowly through the mansion, lured by the sounds of the piano. He found Lex sitting at the piano, lost in thought.

“Lex?” Clark said. Lex stopped playing and looked up at Clark. In his eyes was an emotion that Clark couldn’t quite put a finger on.

“Clark, what can I do for you?”

“Chloe told me about your encounter with the ‘death serum’ I guess you could call it,” Clark said. “I just wanted to make sure you were okay.”

“Of course I’m okay,” Lex said stiffly. “Why wouldn’t I be?”

“No reason,” Clark said quickly. “Just that I’m a little shaken up, having seen my dad and all. And I was just wondering who you saw and if you were as shaken up as me.”

Lex continued to play the piano, playing the same section over and over. “I saw my mother,” he said softly.

“Wow,” Clark said. “What did she say?”

At this, Lex fumbled on the piano. “She said … she said …” Lex couldn’t finish. Clark walked over to the piano and sat next to him.   He tentatively put his hand on Lex’s. Lex stared down and moved his hand, glaring at Clark slightly. “Damn it,” he said softly. He stood and walked over to his desk, hanging his head.

“What’s wrong?” Clark asked softly.

“I thought that … that I was making the right choices,” Lex said softly. “I’m not … she’s dissapointed.” Lex turned to look at Clark, tears in his eyes. “I’m dissapointed. God Clark, what happened to me? When did I become what I most feared?”

Clark walks over to him, stands near him. “When I gave up on you,” he said softly. “Lex, I have been killing myself trying to figure out what happened. I gave up … I stopped believing in you and stopped caring. Damn it, you were my best friend; I want that back.”

Lex stared at Clark for a minute. “It’s not all you. I pushed you too hard, trying to find out things that you weren’t ready to tell me. I want our friendship back,” Lex said softly. “Do you think it’s possilbe?”

Clark sighed. “I’m willing to work on it. I do have secrets,” he said softly.

Lex nodded. “I know you do. My first mistake was to push you too hard to the point where I pushed you away. I won’t make that mistake this time.” He stepped closer and pulled Clark into a tentative hug.

Clark sighed and relaxed into Lex’s embrace. “God, I’ve missed this,” he said softly.

Lex chuckled. “Me too,” he said softly.

Clark smiled and took Lex’s hand and began to lead him in a walk. “I have a story for you … it’s about a boy who was found wandering in the cornfields after the first meteor shower …”
