Clark wandered through the fields, headed for home. School had been a pain, as usual, and all Clark wanted was a piece of his mom’s peach cobbler and a tall glass of milk.
As he got closer to home, the breeze turned and Clark was hit with an intoxicating scent of his mom’s peach cobbler and something else he couldn’t put his finger on. The scent became stronger the closer he got to the house. As he made his way onto the porch, he noticed that there were flowers in the window.
“Clark, you’re home,” Martha said with a smile. “There’s a surprise waiting for you.”
“A surprise?” Clark asked as he stepped into the house, stopping dead in his tracks just inside the door. Every possible surface was covered with vases upon vases of delicate white flowers.
“They’re gardenias,” Martha said with a smile. “And they came with a note.” She took the small card from her back pocket and handed it to her son.
Clark pulled the card out of the envelope.
Clark,
I hope you enjoy the flowers. Gardenias mean ‘joy’ and that is what you bring to my life. My life hasn’t been the same, and I am thankful for that every day.
I love you,
LL
Clark stood silent for a moment before giving his mom a tiny smile. “He loves me,” he whispered.
“Of course he does,” Martha replied, watching as her son moved through the house, pressing his nose to the flowers with a soft smile.
“Can I go … thank him?” Clark asked softly.
“Go on,” Martha said. “Be back for dinner.”
“Thanks, Mom,” Clark said, giving her a quick kiss on the cheek before speeding off.
Martha watched the trail of dust that followed her son with a sigh; he was growing up so fast and she knew that one day soon she would have to let him go.
